of the solution at 0°C for 30 min, the product was extracted with AcOEt, followed by washing the
organic extract with saturated aqueous NaHCO3 and brine. The residue after evaporation separated using
preparative TLC (toluene:AcOEt (20:1)).

5. The complexation of ligands 8b,c with (CH3CN)2PdCl2 and the isolation were examined according to a recent article, see:
Zhang, W.; Shimanuki, T.; Kida, T.; Nakatsuji, Y.; Ikeda, I. J. Org. Chem. 1999, 64, 6247. The complexes were prepared
by mixing equimolar amounts of ligands and (CH3CN)2PdCl2 in benzene at room temperature under argon, followed by
removing the volatile fractions in vacuo. FAB-MS spectra of the crude orange complexes with 8b (C42H46N2O2P2) and
8c (C38H46N2O2P2) were measured, showing intense peaks at m/z 777 and m/z 729, respectively, which could be assigned
to [C42H44N2O2P2Pd]H+ and [C38H44N2O2P2Pd]H+. According to the composition, a 1:1 complexation consisting of the
bonding from two amide groups and the coordination of two phosphorus atoms was speculated. Thus, this unfavorable
complexation has been proposed as a possible explanation for the unexpected behavior of 8b,c in palladium-catalyzed
asymmetric allylic substitutions of 9. The presence of catalytically inactive palladium(II) complex with the similar type of
coordination was pointed out in leading papers, see: Trost, B. M.; Toste, F. D. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1999, 121, 4545.
