Force Fields are not able to correctly describe Hꢀbonds while, on
the other hand, ab-initio MD simulations of ILs would be
extremely demanding as far as computational power and cpu time
are concerned.

Therefore, we assumed we can treat the supramolecular
aggregates, in principle the single cation, the neutral ion pairs
with one or the other ortho 1ꢀbutylꢀ3ꢀmethylpyridinium ring, and
a larger cluster made of one cation and two anions, as putative
structures for which the NMR parameters can be calculated using
T.

10 accurate DFT protocols and compared with the experimental
results. As for the case of DFT calculations of NMR properties of
natural substances, the agreement with the experiments singles
out the correct structure of the bulk IL.
Our results clearly demonstrate that the neutral ion pairs, either
15 Hꢀbonded with one or the other ortho proton, are the most stable
structures and their averaged proton and carbon chemical shifts
are in very good agreement with the experimental results. On the
contrary, both the single cation and the larger cluster made of one
cation Hꢀbonded to two anions are in significant disagreement
20 with the experimental data. Thermal effects on the calculated
chemical shifts, evaluated by first-principles molecular dynamics
simulations, are rather small and can be safely neglected at a
semiquantitative level.
