advice given and any problems encoun-
tered which can be referred to at subse-
quent visits. Seeing the parent and child
on a regular basis encourages a good rela-
tionship. Time invested at this early stage
is invaluable and check-up visits at four,
or six-monthly intervals, or more fre-
quently if necessary, are advisable for
careful monitoring of the child’s oral
health.25
Part 2, the second and final article, will
deal with dental care for the patient with a
cleft lip and palate from the mixed denti-
tion stage through to adolescence and young
adulthood.
