but this band is very weak [25,26], whereas in
our case it is very strong and has PR type
structure and shifted to lower frequency. The
band at 1365 cm−1 refers to w2, the NꢁS
stretching mode of NS-SCN and it shows a typ-
ical PQR-type structure, with a very strong Q-
head. This band may also be compared with the
analog band in the gas phase infrared spectrum
of NSCN at 1374 cm−1 which has a similar
structure [16]. The observed PR separation in
NSCN and NS-SCN is 26.3 and 24.2 cm−1, re-
spectively. The last band observed, centered at
712.6 cm−1, is assigned to w3. It corresponds to
a CꢂS stretching mode of the investigated spe-
cies and may be compared with the same mode
observed in the HSCC molecule, which has a
frequency of 746 cm−1 [28]. All the results for
the NS-SCN molecule are listed in Table 1 in-
cluding full band assignments. Fig. 2 shows the
most stable structure of NS-SCN, as estimated
theoretically with a 6–31G* basis set, using the
SPARTAN package [29].

In conclusion, NS-SCN can be produced and
detected in the gas-phase using a gas/solid reac-
tion of NSCl over heated AgSCN. Due to lack
of other experimental spectroscopic data for NS-
SCN, the assignment of the recorded spectrum
was made in comparison with other related spe-
cies, in particular NSCN. Our work can be con-
sidered as the first attempt to generate such a
metastable and reactive molecule.
