Figure 4. Correlation of dissociation energies (ΔE) with the hydrogen-
bond-accepting parameter β
accepting capability parameter β provided a linear correlation
(r2 = 0.90) despite the fact that the anion is presumably in a posi-
tion that prevents appreciable hydrogen bonding with the
C2―H bond (Fig. 4). This trend appears to suggest that the anion
still may have some through-space interaction with the C2―H
bond; however, all of the calculated (C2)H···Xꢀ bond lengths were
found to be well outside the van der Waals distances necessary for
hydrogen bonding interactions to occur (F···H 2.67 Å, Cl···H 2.95 Å,
Br···H 3.05 Å, and O···H 2.72 Å).[38] Furthermore, because ion-pair
formation depends mostly on the overall electrostatic attraction
between cation and anion, changes in ΔE are not be simply
because of changes in hydrogen bonding, which only contribute
a small amount of energy ( 5 kcal/mol).[39,40] All (O)H···Xꢀ bond
lengths, however, were found to be within these van der Waals
distances, indicative of significant hydrogen bonding between
the anion and the hydroxyl groups.

A series of 1,3-bis(2′-hydroxyethyl)imidazolium ILs were prepared
and analyzed by H NMR and TGA. Chemical shift values were
1
shown to be dependent upon the hydrogen bonding ability of
the anion, as defined by Spange’s βN value, with stronger anions
such as chloride [Clꢀ] and bromide [Brꢀ] resulting in the largest
downfield shifts; however, there was no observable difference
between the monohydroxylated and bis-hydroxyl systems.
Thermal stabilities (Td) of both monohydroxylated and bis-
hydroxylated ILs correlated with anion hydrogen bonding ability,
with weaker anions such as triflate [OTfꢀ], bis(trifluoromethyl-
sulfonyl)imide [NTfꢀ2 ], and tetrafluoroborate [BF4ꢀ] leading to values
in excess of 350 °C. Optimized structures, as determined from DFT
calculations, indicated that the anion was more strongly associated
with the hydroxyl groups of the cation rather than the H2 proton
on the imidazolium ring, regardless of anion structure.
