[23] To obtain 5 in this reproducible high yield, the synthesis should be
performed in two steps. In a first instance addition of stoichiometric
amounts of reagent yields a 2:1 ratio of 6/5. After workup, where water
is removed, 1 was then added to this mixture and leads to full
conversion. See Supporting Information for full details of this procedure.

[28] This work only addresses the possibility of dissociating the digold
sulfate into cationic and anionic fragments. This was shown to be
possible, or at least plausible, as indicated by the formation of species
11b. Possibly, the gold anion moiety, [Au(IPr)(SO4)]-, can undergo
deprotonation of the nucleophile during catalysis leading to a dual
activation mode (based on our crystallization attempts we suspect the
anion to be quite basic). It should be noted that we have shown that the
formation of two cationic gold complexes upon addition of two
equivalents of the strong donor ligand PPh3 is also possible (see
Supporting Information for more details). At this point, we do not know if
only one catalytically-active cationic gold is formed in the reaction
