Conclusions
In summary, we have analyzed the HBN in the single crystal X-
ray structures and gelation abilities of three p-thiotolyl
galactosides and compared the data with the previously
reported series of p-methoxyphenyl galactosides having similar
protecting groups. There are similarities between the two
series of derivatives in respect to their gelation and
crystallization abilities. However, striking differences have
been observed between the series considering the HBN
involved. The presence of the sulphur in the reducing end
glycoside influence the difference in the HBN considerably and
most interestingly, the altered HBN results in the conformation
of the galactose moiety from regular chair form to a skew boat

crystal X-ray structure. It is important to note that a minimal
change in the protecting group decoration on the sugar
molecule can have such impact on the HBN in their molecular
packing.
