Wittig olefination – Suzuki cross coupling – one pot procedure: A
deaerated mixture of 4-bromobenzaldehyde (2, 370 mg, 2.0 mmol),
phenylboronic acid (1a, 293 mg, 2.4 mmol), ethoxycarbonylmethyli-
denetriphenylphosphorane (1.04 g, 3 mmol), a Pd catalyst (2 mol%
Pd, see Table 1) in aq. Na CO (1.4 M, 15 mL) was held at 75ºC for
h. The reaction mixture was then cooled and extracted with chloro-
form (3 × 15 mL). The organic phase was dried over anhydrous
MgSO and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was subjected to
column chromatography on silica gel (hexane/ether/CHCl 3:1:1) to
give ethyl E-phenylcinnamate (5b) as a colourless solid, m.p. 90 °C
lit. 89 °C). ν (KBr)/cm 2940, 1715, 1316, 1035; δ (270 MHz,

This work was carried out with the financial support of a
JST-CREST program. The authors thank Prof. I. Mochida,
Prof. S. H. Yoon and Dr S.-H. Hong, Kyushu University,
for the non-doped CNF materials, Prof. M. Tsuji and Mr M.
Kubokawa, Kyushu University, for their advice on the doping
under ultrasonication (microwave-polyol method) and for the
possibility of using their experimental set-up for these doping
experiments. The authors are grateful for the use of the
analytical equipment of the Center for Analysis of Kyushu
University in Ito-Campus, Motooka. Also, the authors thank
Ms Y. Tanaka of the Institute of Materials Chemistry, Kyushu
University, for carrying out the mass spectroscopic analysis
on the samples. TT acknowledges Dr A. Taha, United Arab
University, for logistic support.
