The poly(N-iodopyridinium) cation can act as Lewis acid
catalyst, activates both epoxide and CO2 and hence shows
dual function for the carboxylation of epoxides.

As mentioned before, one of the most interesting aspects in
the use of iodine along with poly(4-vinylimidazole) as polymer-
supported catalyst lies not only in the efficient chemical fixation
of CO2 into cyclic carbonates from atmospheric carbon dioxide
and on the use of a relatively safe material in comparison to
DBU/I2, but mainly in the possibility of the complete recovery
and regeneration of it. In fact, iodine could be reduced to so-
dium iodide by Na2S2O3 after several cycles of the CO2 chem-
ical fixation which can be oxidized with a stream of low-cost
chlorine with regeneration of iodine. Therefore, P4VP/I2 can be
seen as an ecological catalyst and also the chemical fixation of
CO2 with this catalyst involves only the production of sodium
chloride and sodium sulfate as waste streams.

In summary, a new catalytic activity of DVB cross-linked
P4VP-supported iodine as an efficient and recyclable hetero-
geneous catalyst was proved for the synthesis of cyclic carbon-
ates by the cycloaddition of epoxide with atmospheric CO2
under solvent-free conditions. Due to the strong interactions of
[P4VPI]+ and [I3] −, the volatility and low toxicity of iodine are
greatly reduced as well as a variety of substituted epoxides af-
forded the corresponding cyclic carbonates in good to excellent
conversion and selectivity. The chemical availability of rea-
gents, simple, and sustainable procedure, the use of relatively
safe materials, atmospheric pressure of CO2, recovering and
regeneration of catalyst, and high conversion and yield of reac-
tion indicate a new synthetic protocol for the P4VP/I2 in the or-
ganic chemistry. Its application in the chemical fixation of CO2
has been highlighted the importance of the synergistic effect of
the heterogeneous support and catalyst in the synthesis chemis-
try, and we hope that this work will encourage further research
in this area. Experimental studies concerning the chemical fixa-
tion of CO2 into cyclic carbonates and other valuable chemicals
are currently in progress at our Laboratory which the results
from these studies will be communicated elsewhere.
