Table 1. The TOF value of Cu/Bio-MCM-41 catalyst (0.50 h−1)
was slightly higher than that of Cu/Com-MCM-41 catalyst (0.49
h−1).

The effect of n(H2)/n(MA) on the catalytic performance of
MA hydrogenation for both catalysts at their respective
optimum reaction temperatures is shown in Figure 8. As can
be seen from Figure 8 (A), the MA conversion increased with
the increase of n(H2)/n(MA). The higher values of n(H2)/n(MA)
promoted MA hydrogenation and inhibited the side reactions
of MA dehydrogenation; ethanol selectivity increased
correspondingly [Figure 8 (B)]. With the same value of
n(H2)/n(MA), the order of the ethanol selectivity was Cu/Bio-
MCM-41 > Cu/Com-MCM-41.

We further investigated the effect of LHSV on MA
hydrogenation performance over the two catalysts. As shown
in Figure 9, when the LHSV increased from 0.8 to 8.0 h−1, the
MA conversion decreased from 94.3% to 12.0%, and the
ethanol selectivity decreased from 95.9% to 85.8% for
Cu/Com-MCM-41; while for Cu/Bio-MCM-41 catalyst, the MA
conversion decreased from 91.5% to 11.4%, and the ethanol
selectivity decreased from 96.4% to 87.0%.
