dimethoxybenzene (69 mg, 0.5 mmol) and catalyst were added,
and the reaction mixture heated to 80 °C for 2 h. A 0.1 mL
aliquot of reaction mixture was added to 3 mL of CH Cl and
passed through a Celite plug, dried over MgSO , the solvent

removed in vacuo and the residue was added to an NMR tube
HL3·I (40 mg, 0.12 mmol), palladium(II) iodide (44.2 mg,
0
.12 mmol) and potassium carbonate (84.7 mg, 0.6 mmol)
were dissolved in anhydrous, degassed 3-chloropyridine
2 mL). The reaction mixture was heated to 80 °C under an N
atmosphere for 24 h and turned dark brown. Water (20 mL)
was added and the product was extracted into CH Cl (3 ×
0 mL). The organic layer was washed with water (3 × 20 mL)

containing 0.4 mL CDCl . The conversions were calculated by

H NMR spectroscopy by comparing methyl integrals of 1,4-

dimethoxybenzene (3.77 ppm) and that of 4-methylbiphenyl
(2.41 ppm), while 6-pyridyl proton resonances were examined
for products a (8.43 ppm), b (8.35 ppm) and/or c (8.67 ppm)
due to overlap of their methoxy proton resonances at
3.85 ppm.
