  • General Description (2-Aminoethyl)phosphonic acid is a phosphonic acid derivative that serves as a substituent in the β-D-galactopyranosyl units of the D-galactan found in the albumen glands of the snail *Megalobulimus paranaguensis*. It is esterified at the O-6 position of galactopyranosyl residues, occurring approximately once every 34 residues in the polysaccharide. (2-Aminoethyl)phosphonic acid was identified through (13)C-n.m.r. spectroscopy and cellulose-plate chromatography, and its presence was further confirmed by the isolation and mass spectrometric analysis of 2-aminoethylphosphonic acid-substituted oligosaccharides. The D-galactan containing this modification is notable for being free of protein, lipid, and nucleic acid contaminants, representing the first identified polysaccharide of its kind.
