  • General Description 1',3'-Dihydro-8-methoxy-1',3',3'-trimethyl-6-nitrospiro[2H-1-benzopyran-2,2'-indoline] is a nitro-substituted indoline spiropyran that exhibits reversible photochromism, isomerizing to its merocyanine (MC) form upon irradiation. The MC form can act as a ligand, forming coordination complexes with various metal ions (e.g., Ca2?, Zn2?, Ni2?, La3?), as confirmed by X-ray crystallography and NMR studies. However, complexation is inhibited in aqueous environments due to protonation of the spiropyran. 1' 3'-DIHYDRO-8-METHOXY-1' 3' 3'-TRI-ME& undergoes photoisomerization with solvent-dependent quantum yields, and its transient triplet state has been identified. Additionally, photodegradation products of this spiropyran can catalyze thermal back-isomerization, complicating its photokinetic behavior.
