General Description 1,3,3-Trimethylindolinobenzopyrylospiran (also known as BIPS) is a photochromic spiropyran compound that undergoes reversible ring-opening under acidic conditions or UV irradiation to form colored merocyanine isomers. It forms stable complexes with Al3?, exhibiting a distinct absorption band at 430 nm, and can be used for ultrasensitive Al3? detection. 1,3,3-TRIMETHYLINDOLINOBENZOPYRYLOSPIRAN demonstrates solvent-dependent thermal racemization, with competing polar and nonpolar mechanisms influencing its isomerization kinetics. Additionally, its synthesis can be efficiently improved using microwave irradiation, yielding high product efficiency in shorter reaction times. Under strong acids, it stabilizes in protonated merocyanine forms, enabling pH-gated photochromic switching.
