  • Effects of Long Term Exposure:Repeated or prolonged contact with skin may cause dermatitis.
  • Discovery of Povidone-Iodine Povidone-iodine was discovered in 1955 at the Industrial Toxicology Laboratories in Philadelphia by H. A. Shelanski and M. V.
  • Preparation Method The preparation method involves mixing polyvinylpyrrolidone K with iodine. The steps include adding iodine and polyvinylpyrrolidone K30 into a solid-phase reactor, sealing the cover, rotating the reactor, heating, and continuous rotation until cooled.
  • Chemical Composition and Characteristics Povidone-iodine is a stable chemical complex of polyvinylpyrrolidone (povidone, PVP) and elemental iodine. It is a loose complex composed of elemental iodine and a polymer carrier, povidone, which acts as a dissolution aid. The available iodine content in povidone-iodine should be within the range of 9.0% to 12.0%.
  • Identification and Use Povidone-iodine is identified by its characteristic reactions, such as forming a dark blue color when mixed with starch indicator solution and producing a brown, dry film when applied on a glass plate and dried overnight. It is used as a broad-spectrum, powerful bactericidal disinfectant effective against viruses, bacteria, fungi, and mold spores.
Povidone-iodine has little irritation to the skin, low toxicity, and long-lasting effects, making it safe and easy to use. It is commonly used for skin and mucous membrane disinfection, including cleaning before surgery, disinfecting surgical sites, and treating wounds.
  • Application in Veterinary Medicine Povidone-iodine, usually formulated as a 10% solution, is used as a disinfectant in veterinary medicine. It effectively kills various pathogens in animals, including viruses (Newcastle disease, avian influenza), bacteria (E. coli, salmonella), and parasites (livestock and poultry parasites' eggs). Additionally, it can inhibit the breeding of insects like mosquitoes and flies and can be used in fruit trees, crops, fish, and shrimp farming.
