The reactions of C5H5Co(CO)PMe3 and C5H5Co(CO)PMe2Ph with CH2X2 (X = Br, I) in the presence of NaSH or NaSeH led to the thio- and selenoformaldehyde cobalt complexes C5H5Co(η2-CH2E)PMe3 (E = S, Se; 1, 2) and C5H5Co(η2-CH2S)PMe2Ph (3), respectively.By using CH3CHBr2 instead of CH2Br2, the compounds C5H5Co(η2-CH3CHE)PMe3 (E = S, Se; 4, 5) are formed which represent the first metal complexes with thio- and selenoacetaldehyde as ligands. The reactions of C5H5Co(CO)PMe3 with (CH3)2CBr2 and NaSH or NaSeH lead to the compounds C5H5Co(E2C(CH3)2)PMe3 (E = S, Se; 6, 7)containing a four-membered CoE2C ring.Electrophiles such as HBF4 or CH3I react with 1, 2 either by cleavage of the Co-CH2 bond (and formation of (BF4)2, 9) or by methylation of the chalcogen atom.Treatment of 2-CH2SCH3)PMe3>PF6 (10b) with CF3CO2H and NaI gives the thioether complex PF6 (12).
