Treatment of CC6H4Me-4)(CO)2(η-C5H5)> with (thf=tetrahydrofuran) or ZnPh2 affords the η3-tolyl(phenyl)benzyl complex 3-CH(C6H4Me-4)Ph>(η-C5H5)>, identified by an X-ray diffraction study as a species in which the tungsten atom is ?-complexed to carbon atoms 1,2,7 of the CHC6H4Me-4 group.Similar compounds are obtained from the tolylmethylidyne tungsten complex and the di-organozinc reagents ZnPri2 or Zn(CH2C6H4Me-4)2.However, diethylzinc affords a trimetal complex 2>, which in the presence of traces of water yields 3-CH(C6H4Me-4)Et>(η-C5H5)>.Possible modes of formation of the products are discussed.
