Starting with β-naphthol the skelwton of 1,2-secoergoline has been constructed in eight steps.The key reactions are the formation of the piperidine ring based on a Claisen rearrangement and the dearomatisation of the phenolic nucleus by oxidation with phenylseleninic anhydride.In an addendum the exalted reactivity of β-hydroxyamines in the transamidation of a trifluoroacetamide is described.This is another example of bifunctional catalysis.
