supporting information, p. 2265 - 2271 (2021/05/05)
A new series of hemilabile benzimidazolyl phosphines is reported. Entities in this ligand family can be easily assembled and prepared on a large scale via a simple one-pot procedure. X-ray crystallographic analyses show that the Pd metal center can coordinate in different fashions, where it relies on the size of the ?PR2group. With the same ligand scaffold, the ligand having a ?PCy2moiety displays better efficiency in expediting aromatic C-C bond-coupling reactions, while the ligand associated with a ?P-t-Bu2group, in contrast, promotes C-N bond-forming reactions.

Palladium-catalyzed electrochemical C-H functionalization reactions have emerged as attractive tools for organic synthesis. This process offers an alternative to conventional methods that require harsh chemical oxidants. However, this electrolysis requires divided cells to avoid catalyst deactivation by cathodic reduction. Herein, we report the first example of palladium-catalyzed electrochemical C-H alkylation of arenes using undivided electrochemical cells in water, thereby providing a practical solution for the introduction of alkyl groups into arenes.
The Highly Efficient Suzuki–Miyaura Cross-Coupling of (Hetero)aryl Chlorides and (Hetero)arylboronic Acids Catalyzed by “Bulky-yet-Flexible” Palladium–PEPPSI Complexes in Air

, p. 371 - 375 (2017/12/15)
A series of Pd–PEPPSI complexes were designed and synthesized. The relationship between catalyst structure and properties was systematically investigated. It was revealed that “bulky-yet-flexible” C3 bearing ancenaphthyl backbone was a highly efficient precatalyst and could be successfully employed in Suzuki–Miyaura reactions of (hetero)aryl chlorides with (hetero)arylboronic acids at a low palladium loading in the presence of a weak inorganic base in air.
Scope of Successive C-H Functionalizations of the Methyl Group in 3-Picolines: Intramolecular Carbonylation of Arenes to the Metal-Free Synthesis of 4-Azafluorenones

A transition-metal-free, t-BuOOH mediated intramolecular carbonylation of arenes in 2-aryl-3-picolines via oxidative C-H functionalizations of the methyl group has been developed, providing an expedient synthesis of 4-azafluorenones. Distinct from the current literature wherein methylarenes have been used as acylating agents, 2-aryl-3-picolines in this study are transformed into aldehydes, which give 4-azafluorenones upon rapid intramolecular acylation. The study demonstrates the first example of intramolecular carbonylation of arenes utilizing a methyl group as latent carbonyl functionality.
Rhodium(I)-catalyzed direct carboxylation of arenes with CO2 via chelation-assisted C-H bond activation

Rh-catalyzed direct carboxylation of unactivated aryl C-H bond under atmospheric pressure of carbon dioxide was realized via chelation-assisted C-H activation for the first time. Variously substituted and functionalized 2-arylpyridines and 1-arylpyrazoles underwent the carboxylation in the presence of the rhodium catalyst and a stoichiometric methylating reagent, AlMe 2(OMe), to give carboxylated products in good yields. The catalysis is proposed to consist of methylrhodium(I) species as the key intermediate, which undergoes C-H activation to afford rhodium(III), followed by reductive elimination of methane to give nucleophilic arylrhodium(I). This approach demonstrates promising application of C-H bond activation strategy in the field of carbon dioxide fixation.
Palladium-catalyzed alkylation of sp2 and sp3 C-H bonds with methylboroxine and alkylboronic acids: Two distinct C-H activation pathways
Chen, Xiao,Goodhue, Charles E.,Yu, Jin-Quan
, p. 12634 - 12635 (2008/02/05)
Palladium-catalyzed alkylations of sp2 and sp3 C-H bonds with either methylboroxine or alkylboronic acids were developed. Ag2O or AgCO3 is used as a crucial oxidant and promoter for the transmetalation step. Ether, ester, alcohol, and alkene functional groups are tolerated. A new C-H activation pathway differing from the cyclometalation process is elucidated using methylboroxine as the coupling partner. Copyright
