Lithium dimethylcuprate attacked 4-bromo-2-methyl-4,5-dihydrothiophene 1,1-dioxide at C-2 to give an SN2' product, while other nucleophiles including magnesium diphenylcuprate, sodium benzenethiolate, sodium p-toluenesulphinate, silver acetate, pyrrolidine, and piperidine attacked exclusively at C-4 to give SN2 products. The reactions with lithium dibutylcuprate and with allylzinc bromide proceeded in both SN2 and SN2' manners.
