A process for preparing 2,4-dichloro-5-dichloromethyl-thiazole of the formula STR1 which comprises reacting 2,4-dichloro-5-thiazole-carboxaldehyde of the formula STR2 with thionyl chloride (SOCl2) in the presence of a halogenating catalyst at a temperature between 0° C. and 100° C. Preferred catalysts are aprotic organic nitrogen or phosphorus compounds. The products are directly obtained in high yield and purity so they can be directly used as bactericides or as intermediates for herbicides.
