5,7-Dihydroxyisoflavone (1) on reaction with benzyl alcohol in the presence of boron trifluoride etherate and dioxan gives 6-C-benzyl (4a), 8-C-benzyl (3a) and 6,8-di-C-benzyl (2a) derivatives.Parallel reaction with 3-O-methylgalangin (5) furnishes 6a, 7a and 8a.Mono-C-benzyl derivatives in both cases have been differentiated by comparing their PMR data with those of acetates.
