(Figure Presented) Controlled delivery: Redox commutation of a paraphenylenediamine and aza-crown ether assembly anchored as a self-assembled monolayer to an electrode surface allows the time and spatially controlled release of picomole amounts of calcium ions. The release occurs on a submillisecond time scale, and is irreversible provided that the two-electron-oxidized redox center is not returned electrochemically to its neutral initial state (see scheme).
