Oxidative Addition of H2 and HCl to Iridium Sulfur Monoxide and Sulfur Dioxide Complexes

, p. 967 - 971 (2007/10/02)
Square planar iridium(I) complexes of sulfur monoxide and sulfur dioxide undergo oxidative addition with dihydrogen and hydrogen chloride. The resulting hydrido-iridium(III) complexes have been characterized by 1H, 31P NMR and IR spectroscopy. The limited stability of the sulfur monoxide derivatives is explained as resulting from decreased back-bonding between iridium and sulfur. - Keywords: Sulfur Monoxide, Sulfur Dioxide, Oxidative Addition, Hydrido Iridium Complexes

The sulfur dioxide complexes Ir(PR3)2Cl(SO2) (R=i-Pr, cyclohexyl) react with CO to give the corresponding carbonyls Ir(PR3)2Cl(CO) via the unstable intermediates Ir(PR3)2Cl(CO)(SO2).With H2 and HCl they form the oxidative-addition products IrH2(PR3)2Cl(SO
