Full title: Nickel-thiolate chemistry based on chelating ligands: Controlling the course of self-assembly reactions via ligand bite distances. Synthesis, structures, and properties of the homoleptic complexes [Ni3(SCH2C6H4CH2S) 4]2-, [Ni3(SCH2CH2S)4]2-, and [Ni6(SCH2CH2CH2S)7] 2-. The reaction systems NiCl2/Na2(dithiolate) in methanol (dithiolate = S2-o-xyl2-, edt2-) and acetone (dithiolate = pdt2-) afford the trinuclear and hexanuclear complexes [Ni3(S2-o-xyl)4]2- (1, S2-o-xyl2- = o-xylene-α,α′-dithiolate), [Ni3(edt)4]2- (2 edt2- = 1,2-ethanedithiolate), and [Ni6(pdt)7]2- = 1,3-propanedithiolate), which were isolated as their Et4N+ or Ph4P+ salts. [Et4N]2[Ni3(S2-o-xyl) 4]·2MeOH (4) crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1 with a = 13 131 (3) A?, b = 15.148 (4) A?, c = 16.694 (4) A?, α = 110.26 (3)°, β = 99.41 (3)°, γ = 110.25 (3)°, and Z = 2. The refinement converged to R = 0.058. [Fh4P]2[Ni3(edt)4] (5) crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1 with a = 9.974 (3) A?, b = 11.303 (4) A?, c = 13.840 (5) A?, α = 105.91 (3)°, β = 98.91 (3)°, γ = 112.62 (2)°, and Z = 1. The structure was refined to R = 0.038. 1 may be seen as arising from the chelation of two identical [Ni(S2-o-xyl)] entities to a [Ni(S2-o-xyl)2]2- anion; 2 arises from the chelation of two [Ni(edt)2]2- anions to a third Ni2+ cation in such a manner that the central Ni(II) is surrounded by four coplanar bridging sulfur atoms. The different appearance of the structures of 1 and 2 is necessitated by the steric requirements of the chelating S2-o-xyl2- and edt2- ligands, respectively. The resulting Ni3S8 entities ideally have a boat (1) and a chair (2) conformation. [Et4N]2[Ni6(pdt)7] (6) crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pnma with a = 35.487 (9) A?, b = 17.023 (4) A?, c = 9.284 (3) A?, and Z = 4. The structure was refined to R = 0.067. 3 can be viewed as consisting of two [Ni3(pdt)4]2- subunits with structures analogous to 1 sharing a common pdt2- ligand.

(2-), which can be obtained by reaction of NiCl2, Na2(SCH2CH2S), and Na2S2, is the first complex that contains polysulphide and thiolate ligands simultaneously; the related trinuclear thiolate (2-) has a linear metal frame and is formed in the absence of Na2S2.
