Aminomethyl groups can only be introduced into an activated ring of a sulfonamide under the conditions of the Mannich reaction.The adjacency of the arenesulfonamide and aminomethyl groups appreciably reduces the reactivity of the latter on account of steric hindrances created by the arylsulfonyl residue.
