For 25 η1-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl-substituted boron compounds the synthesis as well as the dynamic behavior are described. 1H DNMR spectroscopic studies and line shape analysis prove a 1,5 sigmatropic rearrangement (1,2 shift) of the boron grouping in many of the compounds. The rate of these rearrangements is decisively influenced by the coordination number at boron as well as by the further boron bonded ligands.Simple bonding models to explain the dynamics of the molecules are presented; for some compounds with trivalent boron, the activation energies (/= 25 kcal/mol) are correlated with characteristic substituent parameters. The X-ray sturcture determination of the highly dynamic fluorobis(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)borane (12) verifies the presence of η1-bonded cyclopentadienyl rings.
