meta-Dialkylamino- or meta-chloro-toluenetricarbonylchromium complexes are much more reactive towards aldehydes in a basic medium than the corresponding para-substituted complexes.If two potential sites of attack, namely the meta and para positions of the C6H5 ring are present in the same molecule only meta-substituted hydroxymethyl products are formed.Dialkylaminoindanetricarbonyl-chromium is a good example to show the stereochemical scope of this reaction since the alicyclic complex obtained results from both a regiospecific and stereospecific addition of the carbonyl compound in exo position.
