Grignard reactions of 3-cyano-6,7-dimethoxy-2-substituted-quinolines with alkyl- and aryl-magnesium halides have revealed the effect of substituents at position-2 of the quinoline ring and also the effect of the nature of Grignard reagent towards 1,2-, 1,4- and 1,2:1,4-additions reactions.The Grignard reaction products have been found to undergo aromatisation and other side reactions during column chromatography.
