General Description
The chemical N-(4-chloro-benzoyl)-N'-(4-nitro-phenyl)-thiourea, also known as CBNT, is a synthetic compound that is primarily used as a herbicide. It is a white crystalline solid that is insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents. CBNT works by inhibiting the enzyme acetolactate synthase, which is essential for the production of branched-chain amino acids in plants. This disruption in amino acid production ultimately leads to the death of the targeted plant. Due to its selective herbicidal activity and low toxicity to mammals, CBNT has been widely used in agriculture for weed control, particularly in cereal crops and non-crop land.
