The 13C NMR spectrum of 10,10-diphenyl-9-phenanthrone was assigned unambiguously using 2D 13C,1H shift correlated NMR spectra, optimized either for one-bond or long-range 13C-1H couplings, and 2D RELAY NMR spectra.This information allowed the structures of number of substituted 10,10-diphenyl-9-phenanthrones to be decuded from their 13C NMR spectra.The results provide an insight into the mechanism of the reaction of 9-fluorenone with chlorodiphenylmethyllithium.KEY WORDS - 13C 2D long-range 13C,1H shift correlation 2D RELAY Substituted 9-phenanthrones

A series of substituted 10,10-diphenylphenanthren-9(10H)-ones has been reduced in ethereal solvents, and the resulting paramagnetic solutions have been examined by multiple resonance techniques.The values and relative signs of the various coupling constants proved useful and unambiguous in ascertaining the position of ring substitution in the starting material.These methods have therefore proved to be an alternative, if rather specialized means to determine which of several isomeric compounds is present.
