A pattern for the dimerization of 1,4-diphospha-1,3-butadienes was discussed. The molecular structures of the monomer and the dimer were determined by x-ray analysis. The bond length of the 1,4-diphospha-1,3-butadiene moiety of 1,4-bis(2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenyl)-1,4-diphospha-1,3-butadiene contained the essential information about conjugation and the participation for the phosphorus atoms in the process.
