In this article, we modified poly[2-(aziridin-1-yl)ethanol] (PAZE) with the dendron 3,4,5-tris[4-(n-dodecan-1-yloxy)benzyloxy]benzoic acid, to obtain liquid crystalline columnar polyamines. The chemical modification reaction was first tuned on a model compound, N,N-dimethyl-2-hydroxyethylamine. The best results were obtained by the esterification method with N,N'- dicyclohexylcarbodiimide at room temperature, in the presence of 4-dimethylaminopyridine. The obtained copolymers showed higher char yield than starting PAZE. In all cases they exhibited small crystalline portions after annealing and columnar mesophases, as inferred by DSC, XRD and POM. The dimension of the unit cell resulted slightly narrower than in the case of the copolyethers bearing the same dendron. This is probably due to the presence of a longer spacer in PAZE, which allows better accommodating of the side tapered group.

A novel series of luminescent low molecular mass materials containing a 2,3-dicyanopyrazine central core were synthesized through an esterification reaction between diphenol 10 and different aromatic carboxylic acids 1-6, containing terminal long alkyl chains. They have a similar V-shaped geometry with lack of planarity between the two arms, confirmed by the X-ray structure of the central core. The optical and thermal properties of these compounds were evaluated. They show blue fluorescence in solution (λemmax 440-480 nm) with quantum fluorescence yields (ΦF) from 0.003 to 0.1 and Stokes shifts of around 90 nm. In solid state, optical band gaps (Eg) were from 3.14 to 3.32 eV. Thin films of 11, 13, and 14 exhibited blue fluorescence (λemmax 430-456 nm), and 12, 15, and 16 (more bulky) displayed green fluorescence (λemmax 488-512 nm). Most of the materials exhibited good thermal stability, exhibiting an amorphous glassy state after melting. Transparent amorphous films were easily obtained through spin coating and characterized by AFM analysis.

The syntheses and characterization of a series of (15-crown-5-)methyl 3,4,5-tris(p-alkyloxybenzyloxy)benzoates with alkyl tails of four 25, six 26, and twelve 27 carbon atoms and of (15-crown-5-)methyl 3,4,5-tris(p-dodecyloxybenzoate) 28 are described.Complexation of the crown ether endo-receptor with NaCF3SO3 destabilizes the crystalline phase of 25, 26, 27 and 28 and induces for the case of 27 and 28 the self-assembly of a supramolecular cylindral channel-like architecture which displays a thermotropic hexagonal columnar (Φh) mesophase.Most remarkably, in the crystalline phase of the complexes of 27 with NaCF3SO3 the cylindrical structure of the Φh mesophase is maintained.Characterization of these supramolecular architectures was performed by a combination of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermal optical polarized microscopy, X-ray scattering and molecular modelling.A model is proposed in which a stratum of the column is formed by six molecules of 27 and 28 with the crown ether receptors residing in the column centre and the alkyl tails radiating toward the column periphery. endo-Recognition generated via the (15-crown-5)methyl receptor upon complexation, and exo-recognition provided by the tapered 3,4,5-tris(p-dodecyloxybenzyloxy)benzoate and 3,4,5-tris(p-dodecyloxy)benzoate fragments of 27 and 28 provide the driving force for the self-assembly of this cylindrical supramolecule.
