During the preparation of 2-(o- and p-nitrobenzyloxy)tropones from o- and p-nitrobenzyl chlorides and potassium tropolonate, a concomittant formation of α-hydroxylated 2-(o- and p-nitrobenzyl)tropones and 3-(o- and p-nitrobenzyl)tropolones was recognized.
