Photochemical reactions of 2 as well as 35 with chiral phenylglyoxylic esters or chiral pyruvic esters, respectively, according to Paterno-Buechi are described.Solvolysis of the oxetanes yields erythro sugar or erythro α-amino sugar synthons, respectively.The diastereoselectivity is above 95 percent with phenylglyoxylic acid (-)-8-phenylmenthyl ester.The configurations of the products indicate the re-attack of 2 resp. 35 to the prochiral 3(n?*)-excited carbonyl group.
