Full title: Trisubstituted heteropolytungstates as soluble metal oxide analogues. 4. The synthesis and characterization of organic solvent-soluble (Bu4N)12H4P4W30Nb 6O123 and (Bu4N)9P2W15Nb3O 62 and solution spectroscopic and other evidence for the supported organometallic derivatives (Bu4N)7[(C5Me5)Rh·P 2W15Nb3O62] and (Bu4N)7[(C6H6)Ru·P 2W15Nb3O62]. The synthesis and characterization of the previously unknown triniobium-substituted Dawson heteropolyanion, P2W15Nb3O629-, as its organic solvent-soluble Bu4N+ salt, are described. The monomer P2W15Nb3O629- is found to undergo formation of a previously unknown Nb-O-Nb bridged species: 2P2W15Nb3O629- + 2H+ ? H2O + P4W30Nb6O12316- (≡ {[P2W15Nb3O61]2-O} 16-). The initial synthesis, at pH 4.6, yields the Me4N+ salt of this aggregate, (Me4N)12H4P4W30Nb 6O123. Metathesis with Bu4N+ provides the Bu4N+ salt, (Bu4N)12H4P4W30Nb 6O123. Cleavage/deprotonation of the latter salt with 6 equiv of Bu4NOH yields (Bu4N)9P2W15Nb3O 62, which has been shown to form covalently attached, polyoxoanion-supported (C6Me5)Rh2+ and (C6H6)Ru2+ complexes of C3v symmetry in acetonitrile solution by IR, 1H NMR, 31P NMR, and 183W NMR spectroscopy, solution molecular weight measurements, and tests with ion-exchange resins.
