Chloro- and trichloro-stannato complexes of ruthenium (II) and ruthenium (III) have been synthesised with bisamine (DPA) and bisbenzyl amine (DPBA) as the primary ligand and PPh3 or Me2SO as the secondary ligand. The complexes, characterised by IR Raman, 1H, 14N, 31P and 119Sn PMR and UV-vis spectroscopy, have a distorted octahedral geometry. The δ Sn values in ruthenium complexes are in the range 118-200 ppm and are much downfield as compared to those in Ir(III)-SnCl3 complexes. The SnCl3- group exercises transeffect with respect to the trans group (N, Cl, P or S) and cis effect with respect to the groups in the cis position. The 2J(Sn-P) coupling in ruthenium complexes is much smaller than that in Ir(III) and Pt(II) complexes.
