Compounds, pharmaceutical compositions and methods for the therapeutic delivery of carbon monoxide to humans and other mammals that employ Mn complexes having CO ligands, and additional halogen, monodentate and/or bidentate ligands, wherein the additional ligands do not occupy trans positions relative to each other.

The reaction between PPN (PPN+ = Ph3PNPPh3+) and N-benzenethiophthalimide (PhSphth) gives CpW(CO)3SPh and PPN, and the organometallic compound was isolated in high yield.Contrasting results occur using PPN and PPN.Although the expected benzenethiolatometal complexes are detected as initial products, these species react further with the pthalimide anion (phth-) to give phthalimidometal complexes.From a reaction using PPN and PhSphth in a 1/2 ratio one can isolate PPN in good yield.There is some evidence that PPN is also an intermediate in this reaction.In a 1/1 ratio, these reagents give a mixture of PPN and PPN.Formation of PPN can also be accomplished by more traditional reaction between PPN and either MnBr(CO)5 or Mn2(μ-Br)2(CO)8.A single crystal X-ray diffraction study provides the structure of PPN.The reaction between PPN and PhSphth gives CpMo(CO)3SPh which is rapidly converted to a species believed to be PPN.Isolation of these unstable compound was not accomplished.
