The reaction of the complex of sulfur trioxide and dimethyl sulfide with olefins and acetylenes in methylene chloride or dichloroethane at 20-80 deg C takes place as conjugate addition of the sulfonate and dimethyl sulfide groups at the multiple bond with the formation of sulfobetaines. The reaction is regio- and stereospecific and leads to the formation of the E products. It can be used for a wide range of olefins and acetylenes.
