The improved Scholl reaction allows for the direct cyclization of anthracene oligomers to give bisanthene, teranthene, and quateranthene. Furthermore, a variety of πnded bisanthenes are obtained by the Diels-Alder cyclo-addition of bisanthene with several arynes.
