One-step conversion of aromatic hydrocarbon bay regions into unsubstituted benzene rings: A reagent for the low-temperature, metal-free growth of single-chirality carbon nanotubes
Fort, Eric H.,Scott, Lawrence T.
, p. 6626 - 6628 (2010)
A tube ride: The controlled chemical synthesis of uniform, single-walled carbon nanotubes from short hydrocarbon templates, such as aromatic belts and geodesic nanotube end-caps, by a Diels-Alder cycloaddition/rearomatization strategy requires a potent masked acetylene capable of transforming hydrocarbon bay regions into new unsubstituted benzene rings in a single operation. Nitroethylene has been found to effect such benzannulations (see scheme).
Facile air-oxidation of large aromatic hydrocarbon bay regions to bay region quinones: Predicted oxygen-sensitivity of hydrogen-terminated carbon nanotubes
Fort, Eric H.,Scott, Lawrence T.
scheme or table, p. 5747 - 5749 (2012/08/28)
Dimesitylbisanthene (1) oxidizes to the corresponding bay region quinone (2) on standing in solutions exposed to air and ambient light. It is anticipated that hydrogen-terminated carbon nanotubes with bay regions on the rim are likely to exhibit even grea
Diels-Alder cycloaddition of acetylene gas to a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon bay region
Fort, Eric H.,Jeffreys, Matthew S.,Scott, Lawrence T.
scheme or table, p. 8102 - 8104 (2012/09/07)
The direct conversion of a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon bay region to a new, unsubstituted benzene ring by Diels-Alder cycloaddition of acetylene gas is reported for the first time. At 140 °C in dimethylformamide, under 1.8 atm pressure of acetylene ga
