In the reaction of 2,2-dichloro-3-oxothiolane 1,1-dioxide, obtained by the chlorination of 3-hydroxy- or 3-oxothiolane 1,1-dioxides, with water, alcohols, and amines substitution takes place at the carbonyl carbon atom with cleavage of the C-C bond, and β-dichloromethylsulfonylpropionic acid and its esters and amides are formed.
