The reaction of 1-benzoin-4-benzamido-3-thiosemicarbazone (BBTS) with some bivalent metal ions gives binuclear chelate compounds of the type, M2(BBTS-2H)X2nH2O and Cu2(BBTS)Ac2.On the other hand, 1-benzoin-4-phenyl-3-thiosemicarbazone(BPTS) yields simple metal chelates having the general formulae Co(BPTS-H)2Ac, M(BPTS-H)2nH2O and M(BPTS-H)Ac .Elemental analyses, molar conductivities, magnetic measurements and spectral (IR, visible) studies have been used to elucidate their structures. The IR spectral data show that BBTS behaves in tetradentate manner (i.e. bidentate to two metal ions) while BPTS acts as a bidentate ligand.Spectral and magnetic studies suggest tetrahedral and octahedral structures for the 4H2O and 24H2O> chelate compounds, respectively. On the other hand, a square-planar for and a low spin octahedral structure for are proposed.
