12070-06-3 Usage

Description

Tantalum carbide (TaC) is a hard, heavy, refractory, and crystalline solid with a gold-colored appearance. It is produced industrially by the direct reaction of carbon with either tantalum scrap or tantalum pentoxide at high temperatures, up to 1,900 °C (3,452 °F). Tantalum carbide is known for its exceptional hardness (1800 kg/sq mm) and low resistivity (30 μΩ·cm at room temperature). It is extremely resistant to chemical action, except at elevated temperatures.

Uses

Used in Cutting Tools and Dies Industry:
Tantalum carbide is used as a hard material for forming the cutting edge of machine tools. A mixture of TaC and graphite provides the necessary hardness and durability for these applications.
Used in Cemented Carbide Tools Industry:
Tantalum monocarbide (TaC) is added in small amounts (0.2–2 wt %) to tungsten carbide–cobalt-based cutting tools in the form of TaC or mixed carbides like TaNbC and WTiTaC. This addition helps to reduce grain growth and enhance the performance of the tools.
Used in Industrial Applications:
Tantalum carbide, when combined with tungsten carbide in a matrix of nickel, cobalt, and/or chromium, provides a formulation that is highly resistant to corrosion and wear. This RHM (Refractory, Hard, and Melting) formulation is particularly suited for applications requiring a combination of corrosion and wear resistance. Some grades of this material are almost as corrosion-resistant as platinum. Typical uses include nozzles, orifice plates, and valve components.
Used in Cemented Carbides:
Adding 2–15 wt % TaC to cemented carbides significantly increases their thermal shock resistance and their resistance to cratering and oxidation, making them more suitable for various industrial applications.

Flammability and Explosibility

Nonflammable

Check Digit Verification of cas no

The CAS Registry Mumber 12070-06-3 includes 8 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 5 digits, 1,2,0,7 and 0 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 0 and 6 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 12070-06:
(7*1)+(6*2)+(5*0)+(4*7)+(3*0)+(2*0)+(1*6)=53
53 % 10 = 3
So 12070-06-3 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
