(Chemical Equation Presented) The ring transformation of 2H-pyran-2-one by N-aryl amidine in the presence of KOH in DMF at room temperature resulted in a facile synthesis of the 2,6-diaryl-4-secondary aminonicotinonitrile and highly substituted unsymmetrical 2,2′-bipyridines in moderate yield.
