The reaction between the enolate derived from 5-C5H5)Fe(CO)(PPh3)COCH2OCH2Ph> and cis- and trans-2,3-epoxybutane proceeds with a high degree of chiral recognition between the reagents (10:1) to give products which may be converted to β,γ-dimethyl-γ-lactones possessing trans- or cis- stereochemistry.
