Conversion of L-glutamic acid to S-ethyl pyroglutamate allows reaction with α,β-unsaturated aldehydes to give the N-dienyl derivative.The resulting dienyl pyroglutamates are new asymmetric dienes which show excellent diastereoselectivity in the Diels-Alder reaction with electron deficient alkenes.
