Highly Selective Substitution and Insertion Reactions of Silylenes in a Metal-Coordinated Polyphosphide

Selective substitution and insertion reactions of silylenes into the cyclo-P5 ring of [Cp*Fe(??5-P5)] are reported. The selective substitution of one P atom by an isoelectronic [LSi] fragment (L = PhC(NtBu)2) leads to [(??4-P4SiL)FeCp*] and [LSi(Cl)a? P-SiL(Cl)2]. To elucidate the reaction mechanism, [{LSi(N(SiMe3)2)}{(??4-P5)FeCp*}], in which the silicon atom binds to the cyclo-P5 ring, was synthesized as a model compound for the reaction intermediate. The insertion of [LSi-SiL] into the cyclo-P5 ring of [Cp*Fe(??5-P5)] resulted in [{??4-P5(SiL)2}FeCp*] featuring a cyclo-P5(SiL)2 ring, which corresponds to the largest silicon-polyphosphorus ring known in a complex.

Since the discovery of the first inorganic benzene (borazine, B3N3H6), the synthesis of other noncarbon derivatives is an ongoing challenge in Inorganic Chemistry. Here we report on the synthesis of the first pnictogen-silicon congeners of benzene, the triarsa- and the triphospha-trisilabenzene [(PhC(NtBu)2)3Si3E3] (E = P (1a), As (1b)) by a simple metathesis reaction. These compounds are formed by the reaction of [Cp″2Zr(η1:1-E4)] (E = P, As; Cp″ = C5H3tBu2) with [PhC(NtBu)2SiCl] in toluene at room temperature along with the silicon pnictogen congeners of the cyclobutadiene, [(PhC(NtBu)2)2Si2E2] (E = P (2a), As (2b)), which is unprecedented for the arsenic system 2b. All compounds were comprehensively characterized, and density functional theory calculations were performed to verify the stability and the aromatic character of the triarsa- and the triphospha-trisilabenzene.

(Figure Presented) It's hip to be square: The reaction of amidinato chlorosilylene (PhC-(NtBu)2SiCl) with adamantyl phosphaalkyne and white phosphorus affords the formation of Si-C-Si-P and Si-P-Si-P (see picture) four-membered rings. Both compounds were characterized by singlecrystal X-ray studies and by solution and solid-state NMR spectroscopy. DFT calculations elucidated the bonding situation.

The first N-donor-stabilized phosphasilene LSi(SiMe3)=PSiMe 3 (L = PhC(NtBu)2) has been synthesized in 87% yield through 1,2-silyl migration of the (Me3Si)2P-substituted, N-heterocyclic silylene [LSi-
