Mononuclear palladium and platinum complexes of the type M(ER)2(P∩P) [M = Pd or Pt; ER = SPh, SC6H4Cl-4, SC6H4Me-4, SC6F5, SePh, TeC6H4OEt-4; P∩P = dppm or dppe] have been prepared and their ability to form dinuclear metal species has been demonstrated. All complexes have been characterised by multinuclear magnetic resonance (1H, 13C, 77Se, 195Pt) spectral data. The effects of phosphine ligands and organochalcogenides are reflected in the 77Se and 195Pt NMR shifts. The shielding of 195Pt NMR chemical shifts has been interpreted in terms of their binding ability to platinum. The structures of two derivatives, namely [Pd(SC6F5)2(dppe)] and [Pd(SePh)2(dppe)], have been established by X-ray crystallography. The palladium atom in each of the monomeric structures exists in a square planar geometry.

The complexes i, SPh, C6H4Me-p or SePh; L-L = Ph2P(CH2)nPPh2 (n = 1-3)> have been prepared and their ability to act as bidentate ligands towards other metal species demonstrated.Proton, 31P and 195Pt NMR spectroscopy have been employed to ascertain their structures.A single-crystal X-ray structure determination of has established the mononuclear nature of the complex. The platinum atom is in a distorted square-planar environment with the selenium atoms and the chelating diphosphine ligand in a cis configuration. The four-membered PtPCP metallacyclic ring is non-planar.

Reactions of the diplatinum(0) complex (1) with H2S and RSH, R = alkyl or aryl, have been studied. With H2S the products were (2) and the cation +, probably as the HS- salt. With RSH the products using an excess of thiol were usually (4; R = Me, Et, tBu, CH2CO2Et, Ph, 4-MeC6H4, or PhCH2).With HSCH2CH2SH the chelate complex (5) was formed.Intermediate binuclear complexes were identified as (7) when R = Et, and (6) when R = Ph or 4-MeC6H4.With PhCh2SH, a major product was the 'A-frame'complex (8) whose structure has been determined by X-ray diffraction.
