The reactivity of 2,5-di(methoxycarbonyl)-3,4-diphenylcyclopentadienone in diene synthesis with α-methyl- and α-methoxyarylethylenes was investigated.The relative reactivity of the styrenes within the individual series is determined by the change in their electron-donating characteristics.The differences in reactivity from one to the other in the series of styrenes depend to a large degree on the localization energy of the dienophiles.
